Kashmir Chronicles

Paintings on paper

This project explores the history of the Kashmiri Pandit community of Jammu and Kashmir, India, which was forcibly displaced from its homeland during the political violence of the early 1990s. Through these works, I examine the enduring impact of displacement on individuals, families, and cultural memory.

The imagery draws from both personal and collective histories, where elements of everyday life intersect with broader questions of homeland, identity, and cultural continuity. Maps, chronicles, poetry, references to Indian scriptures, monuments, textile motifs, and the landscape of Kashmir are woven together to create layered narratives inspired by the native environment.

Using watercolour, acrylic, oil, ink, pencil, textiles, paper cutting, stencils, stamps, and linocut, I build surfaces that evoke fragments of memory and traces of place. Through these layered compositions, Kashmir Chronicles reflects on what is lost, remembered, carried forward, and reimagined across generations.
